CHARITY REGISTRATION

June 2009 - At its Annual General Meeting on 15 June, members formally agreed to the change of name to the Enfield Island Village Trust. Members also agreed to new Memorandum and Articles to enable the organisation to register as a charity.
This means that the Enfield Island Village Trust will, if successful, be able to apply to a wider range of organisations for charitable funding and will benefit from tax arrangements that will ensure more money is available to improve life on Enfield Island Village.
The Charity Commission has given the application a provisional thumbs up and a formal application is now being made.
The new Memorandum and Articles of Association for the Enfield Island Village Trust are here.

CANAL IMPROVEMENTS

April 2009 - This is a project by the Enfield Island Village Trust to overhaul the canal, an important feature of Enfield Island Village. The works cost around £50,000 and include:
  • Replacement of the pen-stock, which enables the canal to be drained so it does not overflow.
  • Removing the 800 tons of silt that has accumulated on the bottom of the canal.
  • Upgrading the pump to improve the oxygenation and water flow.
  • Platinum, our gardening contractor, has helped to clear the canal of debris.
Works started on the 16th Feb 2009 and finished at the beginning of April. The water was drained from the canal during the works and is now being replenished from the River Lee. The work has been arranged by Amber Management, our property managers, and is being overseen by Halcro Engineering, a specialist company recommended by Fairview, the original developer of the site.

Thank you to those residents who helped move the fish to deeper waters.

NEW PLAY FACILITIES FOR CHILDREN

Jan 2009 - Enfield Island Village has been successful in a bid for £50,000 for play facilities. The funding is part of a Government scheme for better play facilities for 8-13 year olds.

Local children at Keys Meadow, Chesterfield and Prince of Wales’ School will be involved in the design of the scheme to find out what kind of play facilities they would like to see on the Island’s parkland. Towards the end of March detailed planning will start and the Play Pathfinder scheme should be finished later in 2009 or in early 2010.

The aim is to have naturalistic facilities designed especially for Enfield Island Village, to fit into the parkland and in response to what Islanders want. Ricky Williams, Play Development Manager at Enfield Council will work closely with the Enfield Island Village Trust, especially with children and their families, on the Play Pathfinder.

FREE SMARTWATER MARKING

Jan 2009 - We have funding for everyone on the Island to have free SmartWater forensic property marking, so if you haven’t arranged this yet, please ring our local police team on 020 8721 2690 or the Enfield Island Village Trust office on 01992 769143.

There is a 100% conviction rate for court cases where Smartwater is used as evidence.

If you were paying for this yourself it would cost around £45 per year. We are providing this as a free service to keep the island safe.

The initiative runs until the end of March 2009 and we cannot guarantee funding after that date. However, if you arrange to have your property marked before then, that property is protected for free for as long as you live on Enfield Island Village.

NHS DENTISTRY UNDER THREAT

Feb 2009 - There is only one dentist on the Island, which is the open access dental centre on the Island Centre. It provides routine and urgent treatment for NHS patients, a far cry from much of the country where there are no NHS dentists.

Since at least December 2008, dental patients are being told there is uncertainty about future and that staff are not expecting to stay beyond February. Residents are being referred to other dentists in Enfield, which is inconvinient for them and will undermine any future dentist's practice on the island.

This is another failure to consult by the NHS in Enfield. We want an assurance from them that every Enfield Island resident will be able to receive NHS dentistry on the Island.

The Chief Executive of Enfield NHS Primary Care Trust promised us that his staff would discuss the issue with us. The PCT told the local press they would work with us (press article click here. You will need Adobe Acrobat reader). However, they have not fulfilled these promises.

Staff at the dentists are no better off: They were to be consulted in October, and then at the beginning of February 2009, but this has not happened. They are as much in the dark as residents.

We have raised the complaint with Joan Ryan MP and local councillors. Norman Ford, councillor for Enfield Lock, has told us that the PCT claims there will be a dental practice on the Island after current arrangements cease, though he had no information about whether a new practice would be required to offer NHS services to everyone on the Island.
